The lights briefly went out in Sundre last Monday, July 30, including at the municipal office where council nevertheless proceeded with its regular meeting. Power was largely restored within about half an hour.

Sundre’s council — along with much of the community — briefly found itself in the dark last week, but was undeterred and remained committed to continuing with a regular meeting as planned.

A strong storm that swept through the surrounding area threatening hail on Monday, July 30 resulted in a temporary power outage after lightning struck and downed a line, said Kevin Haslbeck, communications advisor with FortisAlberta.

The power first started flickering out at around 5:52 p.m., he said, adding a total of 1,288 customers were affected by the service interruption.

Barely half an hour later, by 6:30 p.m., power was restored to 830 customers — including the Sundre council chambers — with another 40 customers back up by 7 p.m., he said, adding the remaining customers had power restored by 1:30 a.m.

However, despite the warnings issued about the potential for severe conditions including damaging hail, Sundre was spared the worst and did not suffer any extensive or widespread damage.
