Once again people in the community are coming together.
An “open mic night” has been arranged for locals to get out in the community and share talents with each other.
Not only are people invited to perform, but they are invited to listen as well, said organizer Lynn Sturby.
“It's a chance for local people to come and sing and share their talents,” she said.
She decided to arrange the open mic night in February, after attending one in Olds and admiring all of the local talent.
“I thought why not celebrate what the community has,” she said.
“It shows us that talent isn't only elsewhere, it's right here in our community.”
People of all ages are invited to sing, read poetry, tell stories and more. No professional training is necessary.
“We're not professionals so everybody is accepting of each other,” she said.
“It's a relaxed atmosphere.”
Sturby has lived in Sundre for four years and has never organized an event such as this before.
However, she has had help from local Paul Shippy, who has organized an open mic night before, she said.
The open mic night is every fourth Wednesday of each month at the Sundre library.
The turnout so far has been slim, but Sturby believes people will be encouraged to come and share what they have to offer and come to listen and interact with others in the community.
“We have our own stories and that is what we're looking for in open mic,” she said.
“Expression is core to the human experience.”
She said it's great for people that are just starting to perform.
Not only has she put this event together, but she takes part in it as well by singing poetry she has written.
“We encourage people's own compositions; it's not so much the idea of performing as it is people coming together and sharing their thoughts and experiences in word and song,” she said.
“That's why I encourage non-musicians to come and have a listen as well.”
