SUNDRE – A male was airlifted by STARS to a Calgary hospital in critical condition after being found lying unconscious on a road west of Sundre, police said.

Sundre RCMP was dispatched at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 28 to a call about a collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Highway 584 and Range Road 61 west of Sundre.

“Witnesses arrived at the intersection and found an unconscious male, seriously injured, lying on the road,” reads part of an RCMP statement given on Tuesday, July 30.

After a call was placed with 911, EMS, Sundre Fire Department and RCMP were dispatched to the scene, where a STARS air ambulance later arrived to provide the 28-year-old male patient emergency transportation to a Calgary hospital.

Preliminary information from the ensuing investigation, which remains ongoing, revealed “the victim fell from the box of the truck while the truck was in motion,” police said.

A 27-year-old female was subsequently arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, as well as failing to remain at the scene of an accident. Criminal Code charges were pending as of the time police released the statement.

The male and female are known to one another, said Sundre RCMP detachment interim commander Cpl. Courtney Harding.

The corporal could not yet confirm whether stunting was involved nor whether the male might also have been intoxicated at the time.

“It’s all under investigation as far as the exact cause of this incident,” she said.

But riding around in a pickup truck’s box is certainly ill advised.

“It’s extremely dangerous to have occupants in the back of a pickup truck,” she told the Albertan.

Sundre RCMP are looking for any potential witnesses who might have additional information including either surveillance or dash cam video in relation to this incident.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Sundre RCMP at 403-638-3675 or their local police. Callers who prefer to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
