More than $10,000 was raised for cancer research from a memorial golf tournament marking one year since the death of Sundre resident Dylan Perry.
Perry was in his early 20s when he was found dead in a vehicle in Calgary on Sept. 14, 2013.
His friends and family hosted a memorial golf tournament at the Sundre Golf Club on Sept. 13, and donated all of the funds raised to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. Perry's sister, Cindy Perry, is a survivor of leukemia.
Cindy was diagnosed with leukemia on July 30, 2012, and was declared cancer-free on March 7, 2013.
"Throughout her battle with leukemia, her big brother Dylan stood by her side," reported Lynn Cox, the society's campaign director, adding Dylan was an active supporter of the society.
"When Cindy needed a bone marrow transplant, Dylan ensured he was tested as a candidate. His love and support gave Cindy the strength to endure."
The event sold out and organizers are planning on making it an annual event.
Dylan was found dead in a vehicle in the ditch along Burma Road in the Bearspaw area of Calgary. He was found in a 2013 Dodge Challenger that was reported stolen about two hours before the collision.
RCMP officers said speed was a factor in the collision. When Perry hit the ditch, he struck a fence post that came into the vehicle and killed him instantly.
He had been at Jamesons Irish Pub, located on 17th Avenue SW, Calgary, and had apparently stayed longer than his friends.
The funds raised from the golf tournament will be spent on the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada's 10th annual Light the Night Walk held in Calgary next month.
"It was a great event and they're a bunch of amazing people and contribute so much to this organization. So we're really thrilled with what they've done," said Cox.
