Council has acted on a request from Lifesaving Society Alberta and Northwest Territories Branch asking the municipality to proclaim July 21-27 as National Drowning Prevention Week.

Reading from the proposed motion, Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, said most drownings are preventable and that Water Smart education plays an important role in ensuring people have a healthy respect for the potential danger posed by any body of water.

Additionally, she said the society urges everyone to supervise children who are in or near water, as well as to refrain from drinking any alcohol while enjoying aquatic activities and to always wear a lifejacket when boating.

Mayor Terry Leslie, who participated in council's June 24 meeting by phone, made the motion, which council carried unopposed.
