Sundre's newest RCMP officer says he's glad to be back in a rural detachment after five years at a big city posting.

Morley Statchuk, 46, joined the Sundre detachment on June 20 after five years with Red Deer City RCMP. He will be doing general policing duties in Sundre.

He explained that when his five-year posting in Red Deer was coming to an end, he requested a rural detachment and Sundre was on his list.

Originally from a small rural community near Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Statchuk worked for years as a grain elevator manager before deciding six years ago that he wanted to finally pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer.

“I always wanted to go into policing, into the RCMP, so I decided to go for it,” he said. “It's just something I always wanted to do.”

He says being posted to a rural detachment will allow him to really get to know the community and its people, something that wasn't always possible in big city Red Deer.

“I grew up in the small town community, so I'm looking forward to working in a smaller community where every call is unique,” he said.

With hobbies such as hunting, quadding and other outdoor activities, Statchuk says Sundre is obviously a good fit.

“It's going to be a great location,” he said.

Although he's only been at the Sundre detachment for a couple weeks, Statchuk says he already likes the move.

“It's a great group of individuals here,” he said.
