The Sundre and District Chamber of Commerce is looking for an interim treasurer after treasurer Amie Flowerday had to step down from the position due to health reasons, chamber members heard last week.
During the June 14 chamber meeting at the Sundre Community Centre, president Sherri Tytkanych announced the opening.
Anyone interested in filling the treasurer position can contact the chamber at the visitor information centre or at the chamber's website.
About 15 people attended last week's monthly chamber meeting.
Visitor Information Centre receiving good responses
The 2011 spring season at the Visitor Information Centre has seen a good number of visitors expressing compliments about the facility, manager Gord Moore told members.
The centre, located on Main Avenue in east Sundre, has a wide selection of tourist brochures and other materials, as well as staff members to answer visitor questions.
The centre has hired the summer student, allowing the centre to be open seven days a week starting in July. Right now the centre is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The student position is being two-thirds funded by a federal grant, with the chamber covering the remaining one-third, members heard.
Moore also explained that the chamber may soon receive official accreditation from the province, opening the way for additional signage and other benefits.
“I think we're in good shape to receive it,” he said.
Workshop designed to promote business
Twenty Sundre businesses will be invited to take part in a free one-day workshop designed to promote good business practices, members heard.
The business retention and expansion workshop is being spearheaded by the Town of Sundre's economic development committee in partnership with Alberta Employment and Immigration.
The workshop will be facilitated by Economic Developers Alberta and will cover such things as the advantages of small business, establishing and maintaining a business retention and expansion program, import replacement, business development, business incubators, home-based businesses and learning environments.
Weed concerns raised in town
Residents concerned about unsightly premises due to overgrown grass and weeds should contact the Town of Sundre to register a complaint, Coun. Myron Thompson told members.
President Tytkanych told members she has received numerous complaints from residents about the state of some properties and homes in town, and in particular the number of properties overgrown with dandelions.
“We don't want our town to look like nobody cares about it,” she said. “It's disgusting in some cases, with the weeds up to thigh height.”
In response, Coun. Thompson said if the town is informed about areas of concern then staff will be able to address it or inform property owners to get the situation cleaned up.
Town councillor Chris Vardas told members that the town constable has been instructed to start issuing warnings and if need be tickets to property owners who are not doing proper upkeep when it comes to weeds and grass.
River signage wanted
The chamber has asked the Town of Sundre to investigate what can be done to have proper signage erected along waterways in town.
In particular, the chamber would like to see signs posted at the Red Deer River and the Bearberry Creek so visitors will know what waterways are in town, said chamber secretary Heidi Overguard.
Town councillor Myron Thompson said he would bring the matter up with council.
Chamber-sponsored concert will kick off rodeo
Caroline's Allen Christie Band will be performing at a chamber-sponsored event to unofficially kick off the 2011 rodeo, members heard.
The band will perform at the Sundre Community Centre on June 23. President Tytkanych explained that the event will be a major fundraiser for the chamber, with proceeds helping to fund other chamber projects.
