SUNDRE — The local RCMP detachment’s newest member said he enjoys not only the challenge presented by police work, but also helping others along the way to building bridges within the community.

Const. Mitchell Ginsberg -- who after recently graduating from Depot started his first post with the RCMP in Sundre on March 30 -- said that prior to pursuing a path in policing, he had worked in corrections serving Toronto and the surrounding areas.

“I have always wanted to help people,” said Ginsberg, in response to being asked what inspired him to change course.

“Being a police officer, there are so many ways of helping, from someone in crisis, to well-being checks, to being a mentor, and being an inspiration to future generations and the youth,” he said.

“I enjoy helping, meeting, and building rapport with the community. I look forward to every day, as no two days are ever alike,” the rookie constable said by email in response to being asked about his favourite aspect of policing.

Although graduating from Depot was “not an easy journey,” Ginsberg expressed no regrets and said, “It’s definitely worth it.”

Anyone who has ever considered enlisting and who relishes the opportunity to rise up and face head-on the curve balls each new day throws their way, should take the plunge, he added.

“I would tell them, 'Go for it!' This is an amazing career with many different specializations and locations to serve in Canada. If you’re someone who loves a challenge, helping others, working in a field where every day is different, this is the career for you.”

Although still relatively new to Sundre, the officer said that to date, the community has been “really friendly and engaging.”

And the spectacular scenery that surrounds the community is icing on the cake, he said.

“The landscape is beautiful.”

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ginsberg said he enjoyed spending his recreational time playing hockey and golf.

Since lockdown measures were introduced, he readjusted some of his routines to include working out, running, reading as well as exploring the culinary arts with some new recipes courtesy of the Food Network.
