SUNDRE – Temperatures in the Sundre area are expected to hit a high of 5 C Wednesday, a far cry from the record-breaking lows recorded in the area on this date last year.

For a fourth day in a row, low temperatures at the Sundre Airport broke records on Jan. 15, 2024.

In a weather summary, Environment Canada noted the Sundre area recorded a new, record-low temperature for Jan. 15.

The temperature dropped to -41.8 C that day at the Sundre Airport. The previous record for the day of -41.7 C was set in 2020.
Area records have been kept since 1993.

Previous records were also broken on, Jan. 14, 2024 (new record of -43.3, old record of -40.9 set in 2005 ), Jan. 13, 2024 (new record of -44.5 C, old record of -41.7 set in 2005) and Jan. 12, 2024 (new record of -44.8 C, old record of -40.3 C set in 1998).

The following areas set a daily minimum temperature record on Jan. 15, 2024 (temperature values given in degrees Celsius):

• Bow Island area - New record of -37.3. Old record of -34.4 set in 1972. Records in this area have been kept since 1961.

• Cardston area - New record of -36.8. Old record of -32.2 set in 1954. Records in this area have been kept since 1918.

• Claresholm area - New record of -38.9. Old record of -37.1 set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1951.

• Crowsnest area - New record of -37.0. Old record of -32.0 set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1965

• Drumheller Area - New record of -40.0. Old record of -39.1 set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1923.

• Esther area - New record of -37.6. Old record of -36.5 set in 2020. Records in this area have been kept since 1985.

• High Level area - New record of -46.4. Old record of -46.1 set in 1971. Records in this area have been kept since 1962.

• Milk River area - New record of -40.4. Old record of -34.5 set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1994.

• Red Earth Creek area - New record of -40.1. Old record of -38.6 set in 2020. Records in this area have been kept since 1994.

• Three Hills area - New record of -43.5. Old record of -43.3 set in 1950. Records in this area have been kept since 1921.

• Waterton Park area - New record of -40.0. Old record of -36.0 set in 1979. Records in this area have been kept since 1976.

Environment Canada notes the temperature records reported here have been derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record.
