A Sundre resident raised nearly $10,000 for the Sundre Elks after taking a self-empowerment course in Saskatchewan over the last six months.
As part of the course, 28-year-old Kristy Willick was asked to pick a charity or a person of her choice to raise money for, and she chose the Sundre Elks.
Her goal was to raise $4,500 and in just two months she raised $9,015.
“I was actually really surprised and I feel amazing. It honestly just feels so good to have raised that much and to know that it's going to be helping people around our community,” said Willick.
She chose the Sundre Elks because she wanted to keep the money in the community, but also because she believes it is a great organization.
“What they do in our community is really amazing and I don't think that many people are aware of the great stuff that they do,” she said.
“For example, they just helped a little boy get diabetic pumps because their family couldn't afford it. It's heartwarming.”
Members of the organization also help people purchase things like hearing aids and other medical needs, as well as sports registrations and hockey equipment, she said.
She asked her friends and family members to donate money and says everyone was really supportive. She is grateful for all of the donations.
“I'm really excited about the result, and proud,” she said.
She has lived in Sundre for 16 years and took the course because she wanted to do something for herself.
She enjoys spending time with her two children: four-year-old Sophia and two-year-old Trace. She and her husband own a construction company together and she is also an independent Arbonne consultant.
