Residents raise money for horse rescue

Two Sundre residents organized a sidewalk sale that was scheduled for Aug. 30, rain or shine, to raise money for a horse rescue organization.

“All the money directly goes to Bear Valley Rescue, which I think is absolutely the most amazing outfit,” said organizer Sylvia Bracken.

“They got a filly and the halter had almost grown into its nose and then it looked like it had been hit by a car or something. And they go out twice a night and get her up, feed her and take care of her, and that's what really got me.”

She and Amanda Kyncl organized the event for the first time together, and the goal was to raise as much money as they could for the organization.

They planned to place items for sale outside of the CIR Realty office in Sundre and use tables from the Elks Hall. If the forecast called for rain, they were going to have the sale indoors.

“People have been bringing nice donations and I'm storing them in the back of the office, pricing them and then we will put them out Saturday and hopefully have a good sale and make some money for them,” said Bracken.

“I think they're a really good organization. They do a lot of good, they do a lot of stuff none of the rest of us would do.”

Mike and Kathy Bartley founded Bear Valley Rescue in 2004, located in West Central Alberta on 40 acres of land.

They take horses in, care for them and find some of them new homes. They house more than 100 horses, as well as other animals including rabbits, chickens, pigs, goats and cows.

Their mission is to save healthy horses from slaughter and rescue injured animals from auctions, feedlots and abusive situations.
