The Chevelles once again returned for the seventh annual Rockin’ the Rink fundraiser for the Sundre Curling Club. Attendance was up slightly from last year, as was the amount raised, said the event’s main organizer.

The seventh annual Rockin’ the Rink fundraiser for the Sundre Curling Club raised more than in the last couple of years.

Attendance, while lower than the first few events, also increased over numbers from 2016 and 2017, said Kevin Humphrey, event organizer and past-president of the Sundre Curling Club.

“It was successful,” he said last week, adding about 240 people came out, up a bit from the last few years, but not as high as the inaugural fundraiser’s more than 300.

“Our second year, I think we had about 350.”

Approximately $8,300 was raised on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the curling rink during the rock and roll fuelled evening featuring the return of The Chevelles. That was up from the roughly $6,100 raised in 2016 and $6,600 last year, he said, surmising that the slow but steady economic recovery might have played a role.

Despite initially hesitating to proceed again this year following the dips in ticket sales over recent years, Humphrey said he did not for a second regret going ahead.

“When you look at the results, I’m glad we did it,” he said.

“I had a lot of fun doing it.”

And those who attended also seemed to enjoy themselves, he added.

“The band was great, the meal was great. I think everybody had a good time.”

The organizer also praised the core group of coordinators who have been crucial in working together to make the fundraiser possible. Playing important lead roles were Sue Comfort, Bev Konschuh, Darlene Kapiczowski, Carolyn Gleeson and Marty Rock, he said.

“The committee does such a good job. I don’t have to look over their shoulders.”

Additionally, there are many other hands that pitch in to help out, he said.

“There are lots of others who help,” he said, adding the event would not be possible without their contributions.

The curling season is expected to be underway by early November. Visit www.sundrecurlingclub.com for more information.
