Sundre's own 15-year-old Dominic Schmiemann has been drafted by the Swift Current Broncos in the Western Hockey League (WHL).

He and his family are moving to Wilcock, Sask. this summer, where he will pursue his hockey career.

“We were on the ice that morning of the draft and then when my name came up they announced it to me and I was really happy. It was a great moment,” said Schmiemann.

“It's so humbling. You hear your name called and then you're just so happy and everyone is so happy for you. Just a great experience. It shows how hard you're working and something is working for you.”

He was born in Sundre and started skating when he was two years old because his family had an ice rink in their backyard.

He started playing competitive hockey when he was five and joined Sundre Minor Hockey for his second year of atom hockey. He played in Cochrane for two years in peewee AA hockey and one year in Red Deer for the bantam AAA rebels.

This past year he played for Notre Dame bantam AAA hockey in Wilcock. He attends school there and will be starting Grade 10 in the fall.

“I love competing and I love pushing myself,” he said. “It's just so rewarding what can come out of it. You learn so many valuable lessons.”

During his second year of peewee hockey in Cochrane, he was selected to play on the all-star team. That same year he played in the World Selects Invitational in Finland, where he was voted team all-star.

“My goal is to just make it as far as I can in my hockey adventure,” he said. “Just working hard and being the player that I am and doing all of the right things and just seeing how far it can take me.”

Outside of hockey he enjoys helping out on his family farm.

“The future is unknown. It really depends on how hard you work and what you can complete. It's competing hard every second. If you work your hardest then whatever comes may come.”
