The chamber of commerce has passed a motion in support of a new project that will promote shopping at Sundre chamber member businesses.
The Shop Locally Committee and the Sundre Round Up have teamed up for the initiative, which will see a full-page colour advertisement published in the newspaper.
The page will feature a new chamber message every month, as well as tips and suggestions on how to keep shoppers shopping in town. Chamber member companies will sponsor the page with specially discounted advertisements.
The chamber's Shop Locally Committee member Jim Eklund said the project should be a good support for the local economy.
“I think it's a great deal and a great project for the chamber,” said Eklund. “Our committee looked at this proposal and it's a no-brainer.”
Chamber member Dennis Overguard called the project a good initiative.
Sundre Round Up advertising staff member Kimberly Comfort presented members with a mock layout for the new page.
“I hope other chamber members think it's a good idea. This project will promote our town businesses and what they can offer us,” said Comfort.
Chamber members passed a motion put forward by Overguard in support of the project.
Also during last week's chamber meeting, Perry Stokalko, the founder of Shindo Kempho Karate-do, made a brief presentation to members.
He said major renovations in the Elks Hall basement have been made to accommodate the club and community activities.
He also explained that there are about 45-50 Sundre and area kids in the programs right now.
Stolkalko explained that the club has brought several high-profile Karate experts and instructors to town over the past number of years, giving the community a high profile on the international stage.
Last week's chamber meeting also included updates on the Sundre Trade Show, the Pinkest Town in the West project, and the Sundre Parade, with the theme of Salute to Agriculture.
Chamber secretary Heidi Overguard said there will be an antique tractor category in this year's parade.
There was also a discussion of the chamber possibly hosting an Octoberfest fundraiser for community groups.
