The committee resurrecting a skateboard park proposal first introduced seven years ago got commitment last week from council on the location of the proposed attraction.
In 2004, council designated the land west of the curling rink and high school parking lot to be the site for a skatepark.
ìRecognizing that several years has passed and that both council and the skate park committee has changed, we are asking that town council redesignate this land to the Sundre Skatepark Project,î requested Bill Lough, co-project manager of the Sundre Skatepark project.
Council agreed during its meeting last Monday night to designate the requested parcel of land south of 2 Ave. NW and south of the rodeo grounds for the project.
ìThe skatepark committee felt it appropriate for this council to redesignate the land in the hopes of dissuading any lingering doubt in people's minds on whether the project is a go or not,î said Jacci Hager in her submission to council.
While the project had council backing in 2004, the project never came to fruition.
At the time it gave approval to the location in 2004, council had also made a motion to have administration investigate the costs to have the Sundre skateboard park under the municipality's blanket liability.
Council's commitment to the location last week will now allow the committee to proceed with grant applications to help finance the estimated $170,000 project.
ìWe are excited by the response that the community of Sundre has shown towards this project and wish to maintain this interest,î Lough wrote in his request to council.
Council also approved of the committee's request to erect a 20 foot tall by eight foot wide sign on the land intended for the future skatepark.
ìThis sign would be large enough to be easily seen from the street and would include text indicating what the proposed project is in addition to information about where to donate and who to contact with questions,î said Paul Shippy, skatepark project co-manager in a request to council.
Before erecting the sign, the committee must supply the town's planning and development department with the appropriate site plans and drawings relating to the signage to ensure it is in accordance with the land use bylaw.
