Spoon full of sugar: Sundre theatre group's next offering starts Friday

B.S. Productions holds Mary Poppins performances starting Friday and wrap on Feb. 23

SUNDRE – After months in the making, the cast and crew of a local theatre group is almost ready to raise the curtain on their musical rendition of the classic tale about a whimsically magical nanny.

Following a music theatre workshop hosted near the end of August with auditions in late September successfully securing an all-ages cast, the B.S. Productions team has been busy memorizing their lines and dance routines before the doors open at the Sundre Arts Centre for the first of six performances later this week.

“We’re working very hard and having lots of fun,” Jamie Syer, music director, told the Albertan.

“The singing is amazing, the dance is spectacular, the costumes bring our characters to life, and the storytelling will be unforgettable,” said Syer.

B.S. Productions will be presenting a rendition of Mary Poppins that blends elements of both the Disney classic as well as a stage adaptation by Cameron Mackintosh.

Syer has been working alongside his creative counterpart and director Brian Bailey, with choreography by Move Yourself Dance Studio.

The performance is based on the Disney film and features new material from the original books by P. L. Travers.

“Mary Poppins is a story of family, friendship, fantasy, and discovery: finding that things – and people – are not always as they seem,” reads part of a description posted on the arts centre’s website.

“With sparkling choreography and astonishing music, this is a Mary Poppins you’ll not want to miss, and you’ll not soon forget.”

The show opener takes place on the evening of Friday, Feb. 14 with the final curtain coming down for a matinée on Sunday, Feb. 23.
