The recent 19th annual Renegade charity golf tournament fundraiser to support STARS brought out a big crowd.
Dean McBride, head professional and director of golf at Coyote Creek Golf and RV Resort, said there was a greater-than-average turnout this year, with 152 golfers making up 38 four-player teams.
A full course is 144 players and some years have seen attendance ranging from 100-120, so organizers were very pleased with the “excellent” turnout, McBride said.
“It ended up being a great day,” he said last week, adding rain on Friday, Aug. 23 held off until after the event.
An auctioneer was brought out so people could bid on goodies like pies and cinnamon buns, with some fetching as much as $100 before being re-donated and later resold. Additionally, he said Stu Wilson, a Calgary resident whose life was saved by STARS, shared his personal story during a presentation.
Although expenses were still being settled last week and an estimate on the amount raised hadn’t been calculated, McBride said the event has on average raised anywhere between $15,000 and $20,000.
“At the end of the day, it exceeded my expectations,” he said. “Just goes to show how giving the community in Sundre and the surrounding area is.”
Seeing so much support “makes it all worthwhile” and McBride is already looking forward to working on making next year’s 20th anniversary of the event a “big one.”
