The second annual Play 4 Sundre Kidz charity golf tournament was another success, an organizer said.

This year, 127 people came out to support the fundraiser, said Chris Vardas, who last year teamed up with Dr. Rob Warren to launch the inaugural fundraiser.

“The turnout was fantastic,” he said, adding the weather was quite pleasant to play golf.

“It was great to see the support from everybody and the volunteers,” he said, expressing gratitude to everyone who got involved.

The event, which raises funds in support of providing sporting opportunities for local youth, was held Saturday, July 14 at the Coyote Creek Golf & RV Resort.

Last year’s tournament brought in a little more than $12,000, and Vardas said last week he expected that amount was exceeded this time around. His wife Nicky Vardas followed up by email over the weekend to say $14,500 was raised.

The funds from last year have already been divvied up and made available through an application process, he said.

“We’ve distributed the batch of money from the first round.”

Every effort is made to evenly split the pot so approximately half is dedicated for winter sports and the other half for summer sports, he said.

A committee was set up following last year’s event to consider requests, and Greenwood Neighbourhood Place can also provide referrals. Additionally, Vardas said there would likely be a table set up during the welcome back barbecue and registration event in September so people can apply.

In light of two successful years in a row, Vardas said he and Warren are considering conjuring up some ideas for a winter fundraiser, but nothing has been formally confirmed.

“It is a possibility,” he said.

In the meantime, he looks forward to hosting the charity golf tournament again next year, and hopes to see everyone come back out.
