SUNDRE – The Town of Sundre has joined a bidding process in the hopes of being selected to co-host this year’s province-wide Seniors’ Week launch.

Alberta Seniors, Community and Social Services is offering a chance for communities or organizations to partner with the ministry to co-host the annual event, which is scheduled for Monday, June 2.

The successful applicant would receive a $5,000 grant to collaborate with local groups and businesses to plan the launch event, which in the past has reportedly been attended by as many as 500 people.

Earlier this year, Sundre's council passed during a motion proclaiming June 2-8 as Seniors’ Week.

When it came time at a later meeting to make a motion supporting the co-host application, Coun. Owen Petersen said the proposal looked great.

“I think we have a lot of facilities in this town that would be really wonderful,” said Petersen.

Reluctant to get too far ahead of himself in suggesting potential locations before the town’s application has even been approved, the councillor nevertheless mused about the possibility of hosting activities at venues such as the Sundre and District Museum and the interpretive nature boardwalk.

“We have about two pages of activities written down already,” said Linda Nelson, the town's chief administrative officer.

Coun. Jaime Marr spoke in favour and asked if administration would in the event the application was successful work alongside other groups in town that house or otherwise provide services to older adults.

“Absolutely,” said Nelson. “We have a list of organizations that we would like to partner with.”

Following the brief discussion, council unanimously carried Petersen’s motion.
