SUNDRE - Sundre-area MLA and UCP cabinet minister Jason Nixon says the recently completed legislative session was a success and that he now plans to spend some time in his riding consulting with constituents.
Wrapping up on Dec. 5, the session saw a number of major pieces of legislative passes by Smith government.
“This session we stood up for the rights and freedoms of Albertans on an unprecedented scale,” Nixon told the Albertan. “The legislation passed this session ensured Alberta is a leader in Canada by standing up for property and firearm rights, enhanced parents’ rights in their children’s lives, all while improving privacy protections.
“We stood firm against Justin Trudeau’s continual overreach, passing an Alberta Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act motion to protect Alberta from the job-killing, unconstitutional federal emissions cap.”
The minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, Nixon says before the start of the spring session, he plans to be in the riding, including in Sundre and area.
“I’m looking forward to being back in Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre and hearing directly from constituents about what matters to them.”
Among the key pieces of legislation passed in the fall session was the Eduction Amendment Act, 2024.
Under that legislation school boards are now required by law to “notify parents and provide the opportunity to opt their child in, rather than opt-out, where courses, programs of study or instructional materials, instruction, or exercises include subject matter that deals primarily and explicitly with gender identity, sexual orientation or human sexuality.”
In a statement provided to the Albertan, NDP opposition Education critic Amanda Chapman called the legislation flawed.
“The benefits of comprehensive sexual health education are numerous including reductions in gender-based violence. Adding barriers between our kids and this important information does them a great disservice," said Chapman.
Nixon's riding includes portions of Mountain View and Clearwater counties.
