SUNDRE — The MLA for the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding issued a statement earlier today demanding an end to mandates including the Restrictions Exemption Program.
“My position on vaccine mandates is that they need to end,” said Jason Nixon in a statement issued on Thursday, Feb. 3.
Nixon said he’s expressed his position to Alberta Premier Jason Kenney.
“You’ll note that the premier said they’ll be gone imminently, and I’ll hold him to it,” reads a portion of Nixon’s statement.
“I am not a doctor,” his statement reads. “So like many I have relied on the advice of doctors for the past two years.”
The MLA, who is also the minister of Alberta Environment and Parks, went on to claim without presenting evidence that mandates including the Restrictions Exemption Program are not as effective against the current COVID-19 situation, which has seen a surge of hospitalizations, including paediatric cases.
“That’s why I have been making it clear to the premier and my colleagues that I oppose the continued use of the Restrictions Exemptions Program.”
The minister could not immediately be reached for comment.
Health experts continue to encourage the use of masks when physical distancing is not possible as well as getting vaccinated in the effort to reduce the spread of the virus to prevent the health-care system from becoming overwhelmed.
Nixon also encouraged people to contact their Members of Parliament to express concern with the federal border vaccination mandate.
