SUNDRE – The municipal council recently gave a green light to a request from the Sundre Volunteer Search and Rescue Society to amend the use of previously approved grant funding.

The society was among numerous community service groups that earlier this year applied for a portion of funding from a pool specifically allocated to a municipal program called Grants to Organizations. Submitted applications are through a review process considered by a subcommittee of council which then makes recommendations prior to final approval.

The initial request for funding in the amount of $2,000 that council approved in February was intended to help the society offset the cost of renovating their facility’s electrical and heating systems.

The group uses a hangar at the Sundre Airport not only to store equipment but also to conduct training sessions as well as meetings.

Council heard during the regular Oct. 2 meeting that the society had since submitted a request to amend the use of the funds.

“SAR members determined that due to a lack funds to complete the electrical and heating upgrades, the renovations schedule was re-prioritized to complete another high-priority remediation of the overheard door of the facility,” Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, told council, adding administration recommended approving the request.

Coun. Chris Vardas so moved, and without any comments from council, mayor Richard Warnock spoke in favour of the motion before it passed unanimously and said the society had provided good documentation outlining the reasons justifying the request.
