Revisit recreation board options
Coun. Paul Isaac brought forward a notice of motion to investigate the possibility of reviving a recreation board in Sundre in light of concerns raised by members of the public and representatives of non-profit organizations regarding the relationship between volunteer groups and the municipality.
“I’ve been thinking about this since the last delegation last week regarding the swimming pool and the curling club,” said Isaac, referring to the June 11 presentation by three representatives who sit on the Sundre and District Aquatic Society, the Sundre Curling Club as well as the Sundre and District Agriculture Society. “Afterwards, I did some research and some calling around to friends that work in other municipalities.”
In light of those conversations, the councillor decided to bring forward the following notice of motion, “to direct administration to research and bring back to council for decision information on recreation boards, details such as how do we form a recreation board, how to run a recreation board, how rec boards are run in other communities, and how the rec board in Sundre was run in the past.”
The purpose of the motion is for council to decide whether to reintroduce a recreation board, and if so what form it would take, he said.
“We as council need to have some options. This is more of a proactive motion than a reactive motion.”
Looking ahead to 40th annual parade
Recapping a conversation with co-parade planner Moe Fahey, Coun. Cheri Funke told her council colleagues that the event’s organizers have their sights set on next year’s 40th annual milestone.
“She is already working on planning the parade for next year,” said Funke, adding Fahey intends to remain involved despite having considered stepping back as a main organizer.
“It’s their 40th parade next year, so she would like us to start thinking about putting an actual float for us in the parade. I told her I would put the bug in your ear.”
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Chief administrative officer Linda Nelson informed council about a recent meeting she had with representatives from Greenwood Neighbourhood Place to discuss elder abuse.
“Last year we signed a proclamation, making June 15 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day,” said Nelson as a reminder to council that the official declaration has been recognized in the past.
Council’s agenda package included a letter signed last year by Mayor Terry Leslie, who had proclaimed in perpetuity June 15 as Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Sundre.
“I encourage all Sundre residents, organizations, and agencies to take action against elder abuse. At the same time, as a collective, we will recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the older adults in our community,” reads the letter dated June 5, 2017.
Council carried a motion to accept Nelson’s reminder as information.
