SUNDRE – A local cowboy was among the contestants to walk away with a top prize from the Sundre Rodeo Grounds following this past weekend’s event.
Briley Scott, who is no stranger to competing at the Sundre Pro Rodeo, which was held earlier this summer in June, was among dozens of contenders to throw his name in the ring for Broncs, Bulls and Wagons, the Sundre Rodeo & Race Association’s second event of the summer.
Scott won the bronc riding event while Marcos Gloria, from Brazil, took the top spot in the bull riding category, said Dale Young, event organizer.
“That was pretty cool,” said Young. “Big highlight having a local kid win the bronc riding event.”
Overall, there were about 28 chariot as well as 26 chuckwagon drivers, with an additional roughly 20 contestants in both the bronc and bull riding events, he said.
“It was a good turnout,” he said.
The chariot races came down to the wire, with the top-four racers remaining just about neck and neck throughout the contest, he said.
“From the racing side of things, it went right down to the last day to decide the winners,” he said.
Emerging victorious in the chuckwagon races was Jack Stott, he said.
“He dominated all three days and won the show,” said Young.
Marvin Hubl and Young placed second and third respectively.
Edging ahead in the chariot races was Adam Waldner, he said, adding Taya Young and Laura Talbot finished second and third.
Yet it arguably wasn’t just some of the contenders who won this past weekend, but pretty well anyone and everyone who came out. Clouds parted and paved the way for clear, sunny blue skies following days of fairly dreary overcast weather leading up to Friday’s first performances of the weekend.
“It was a beautiful weekend,” he said. “The weather was nice and the crowds were great; everybody was enthusiastic and having a good time. It was perfect.”
Although he did not immediately have numbers readily available, Young estimated based on what he called higher-than-average ticket sales at the gates that there throughout the weekend was a record crowd.
He expressed on behalf of the organizing committee appreciation to the businesses and volunteers who got involved and supported the event.
“Without either of them, none of these events happen in our community,” he said, also extending gratitude to fans who came out.
The chuckwagon and chariot races were sanctioned by the Alberta Professional Chuckwagon & Chariot Association, while the main livestock contractor and event organizer for the broncs and bulls was Northcott Rodeo.
