SUNDRE — The local curling club received the remaining balance of $20,000 the organization had initially applied for through a grant review committee to help cover the cost of repairing the rink’s roof.

Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, told council during the regular Jan. 11 meeting conducted by teleconference, that the Grants to Organizations Committee had the week prior met remotely with the Sundre & District Curling Club to discuss the previous grant request with regards to the repairs.

Nelson reminded council about the two applications the club had previously submitted to the committee in 2020.

The first amount that had initially been sought out was for $20,000, and the club was at the time awarded $10,000. Upon another application for $10,000 submitted during a second round of intakes, the club was given a little more than $4,000, she said.

“The grant review committee has been presented with a request for the additional $6,000,” she said.

“This is actually based on the actual numbers being finalized, and there was a discussion with council as well, that when the final numbers came in, we would give the curling club an opportunity to come forward for the balance of the funds.”

In the end, the roof repairs added up to more than $30,000, she said.

“So, the grant review committee felt that awarding them the additional $6,000 to bring the amount that we are giving to the curling club up to $20,000, was reasonable.”

Administration sought council’s approval of the request for funding as per the committee’s recommendation, she said, adding funds would be drawn from the 2020 operating budget’s transfers to local organizations.

“This will not put this budget line in a deficit. We have enough in that area to be able to provide those funds,” she said.

Coun. Rob Wolfe’s motion to approve the request carried unanimously.
