SUNDRE – Two prominent Sundre physicians were recognized recently during an annual conference for rural medicine.
Dr. Michelle Warren and Dr. Jonathan Somerville received awards at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine’s 2025 Cabin Fever conference that was held in February at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge.
The annual conference that is delivered through the university’s Distributed Learning and Rural Initiatives provides an opportunity to discuss the latest topics and trends in rural medical education.
Somerville, who is on the panel at Greenwood Family Physicians, was presented the Dr. Hal Irvine Community Focus Award.
It honours a University of Calgary preceptor who has demonstrated dedication through service and personal commitment to improving the quality of life in their rural community, embodying the spirit of longtime Sundre resident Dr. Hal Irvine, who inspired his students with his passion for rural medicine and commitment to lifelong learning.
Warren, who runs the Moose & Squirrel Medical Clinic alongside husband Dr. Rob Warren, was presented with the Dr. Ian Bennett Meritorious Service Award.
It is given to a University of Calgary preceptor with a demonstrated education focus of more than 10 years, or a single extraordinary demonstration of dedication to medical education that reflects the legacy of Dr. Ian Bennett, renown as a leader in continuing education for rural doctors and a committed community member.
