The Sundre Farmers’ Market seems to be experiencing growth with an increased number of vendors booking tables.

When asked on the afternoon of Friday, July 26 how the market was doing so far this season, Karen Campbell, who with husband Sheldon farms in the area and was harvesting hay when she spoke with the Round Up, said she was expecting more than 50 tables for that evening’s market. The average, Campbell added, is usually in the lower 40s.

Six new vendors were lined up to come out that evening with fresh harvests that were finally ready, she said.

Corn from Taber is expected to be arriving in the coming weeks, she said.

Plans are in place to host on Friday, Aug. 16 a special customer appreciation market that will feature a variety of food preparation demonstrations as well as some displays including a bee colony, she said.

“It’s a pretty exciting time.”

The appreciation event is being organized in conjunction with the second annual Alberta Local Food Week, she said. That initiative started last year to encourage opportunities for people to meet local farmers and entrepreneurs, reads the provincial government’s website.

The market will also be starting earlier at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9 during the community weekend boasting several events including SPOG’s Neighbours’ Day, Bulls and Wagons, and a car show.

The market runs weekly every Friday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sundre Curling Rink until late September.
