SUNDRE — As the saying goes, no news can sometimes be good news.
The local fire department reported no major vehicle collisions or serious fires over the span of the Heritage Day long weekend.
Ross Clews, the Sundre Fire Department’s chief, said crews responded to a total of seven calls between Friday, July 29 and Monday, Aug. 1.
Two of them were false smoke alarms, two more calls were in response to assist emergency medical services, another involved a citizen assistance when a dog was discovered locked inside a vehicle, a flare stack fire was erroneously called in as a potential blaze, and a crew was also called out to provide mutual aid assistance to the Cremona Fire Department, which ended up standing down the unit from Sundre, said Clews.
The fire department did not respond to any serious motor vehicle collisions or structure fires over the course of the four-day weekend, he said.
The otherwise quiet Heritage Day holiday seems to be continuing a trend of rather uneventful long weekends in the Sundre area, he said.
Throughout this summer camping season's long weekends, when many thousands of recreational outdoor enthusiasts of all walks head out into the West Country, he said people seemed to have been paying more attention and playing more responsibly.
“A lot of our call volumes on the last couple of long weekends actually have been fairly quiet.”
