SUNDRE – Plenty of parents and guardians were undoubtedly relieved to be spared from the fallout of carving out jack-o'-lanterns at home in the kitchen.
More than 100 people, including dozens of children, came out to the Sundre Fire Department's hall on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 23 for the annual community pumpkin carving.
"It's definitely one of our favourite events," said Ryan Martens, a captain with the department.
The Halloween fun is facilitated courtesy of a partnership with the department that makes available not only the space and carving tools but also a variety of stencil patterns, as well as Freson Bros., which contributes a couple of pallets worth of pumpkins.
"I would say easily 60 pumpkins were carved," said Martens, who expressed gratitude for all of the gourds that are donated.
Sundre resident and mom Ashley Christensen, who brought out her boys Deacon, 10, and Cooper, 8, said carving a couple of pumpkins at the fire hall has become a bit of a family tradition and that the brothers both enjoy coming out every year.
