SUNDRE – Five contestants representing courses throughout the region were among those who competed last week in the 2023 Alberta Women’s Seniors Championship amid cloudy, drizzling skies.
The action at Coyote Creek Golf & RV Resort got underway on Tuesday, July 25 with the final round wrapping up Thursday, July 27 with more than 50 golfers hitting the fairways.
The contest started off as a two-horse race between Celina Lam and Lynn Kuehn, who were seven shots clear of Jackie Little, according to an Alberta Golf statement posted with results.
“But a very strong front nine of 34 for Little vaulted her into the mix with one shot separating all three golfers heading to the back nine,” it reads in part.
The leaders remained largely neck and neck until Lam, from The Canal at Delacour Golf Course west Calgary, “made a fantastic approach on 17 and drained the birdie for a two-shot lead with one hole to play.”
However, keeping the lead in a championship event is no easy feat.
“Lam had some bunker issues at the green and made a great two-putt to save double bogey, and then waiting to see what Kuehn and Little did with their putts to force a playoff.”
The nail-biter ended with Kuehn, from the Lacombe Golf & Country Club, narrowly missing a 30-foot shot while Little, from the Balfour Golf Course, put a perfect stroke on her 20 footer that looked to be falling at the end but missed by less than an inch, leaving Lam to take the title by one stroke.
Meanwhile, Cathy Spicer, from the Olds Golf Club, finished in a two-way tie for 21st place.
Marg Bergsma, with the Sundre Golf Club, was in a two-way tie for 39th place.
Loreen Lehmann, from the Carstairs Golf Club, ended up in 41st.
Kristine Schultz, who plays with the Olds Golf Club, placed 44th.
Caroline Tester, representing the Innisfail Golf Club, ended up in a three-way tie for 46th place.
