The Royal Canadian Legion Sundre Branch #223 Ladies Auxiliary endeavours to team up alongside a crocheting group known as the Nimble Fingers that meets at the legion’s hall and has some members on the auxiliary. The interconnected groups recently supported the Mountain View Emergency Shelter Society’s women’s shelter called Kirsten’s Place with the Ladies Auxiliary donating $5,000 while the Nimble Fingers offered six quilts, three afghan blankets, a dozen handmade balls for children’s play, as well as some hats and mitts. Dale Rosehill, the society’s director of fundraising, second from the right, accepted the donation presented by Kristy Gamble, at right, president of the Ladies Auxiliary. Simon Ducatel/MVP Staff

SUNDRE – Two local organizations recently teamed up to provide some support for the Mountain View Emergency Shelter Society’s new emergency shelter in Olds.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #223 Ladies Auxiliary in Sundre went to work alongside a crocheting group known as the Nimble Fingers, which meets at the legion’s hall and also has some members on the auxiliary.

The Ladies Auxiliary donated $5,000 to the shelter, which is called Kirsten’s Place, while the Nimble Fingers offered six quilts, three afghan blankets, a dozen handmade balls for children’s play, as well as some hats and mitts.

Dale Rosehill, a society director, attended to accept the contributions as well as provide some information about the project.

Rhonda Fullerton, a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary and current vice-president, said a majority of requests for help come from the Sundre area.

Additionally, emergency shelters do not necessarily always receive government funding, said Fullerton, adding only a select number receive funding.

"This is a huge surprise, and a little scary," she said.

And while some shelters have corporate sponsors, MVESS does not as yet have one, she said.
