STAR 1 airlifted to Calgary last Tuesday, May 21 an approximately 19-year-old Sundre male who was in stable condition after being extricated from the wreck of a rolled vehicle near the Eagle Hill area. Sundre RCMP said alcohol and drugs were not factors that led to the crash, and that the driver had fallen asleep and drifted off of the road.

A young male from Sundre extricated from a rolled vehicle last week was back home the same day after being airlifted by STARS in stable condition to Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre.

The Sundre Fire Department responded shortly after 7 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21 to a report of a single-vehicle rollover. A car collided with a power pole and downed a line east of town near the Eagle Hill area, said the Sundre Fire Department's Chief Marty Butts.

“It was a bad wreck,” said Butts, adding firefighters could not immediately extricate the trapped driver until a Fortis crew arrived to ensure the scene was safe.

As soon as they got the all-clear to proceed, Butts said the firefighters immediately proceeded to successfully extricate the driver, who was evacuated by an air ambulance.

STAR 1 was dispatched at 7:41 a.m., and transported the approximately 19-year-old male, who was in stable condition, to Calgary, said a STARS spokesperson.

Considering the condition of the wreck, the fire chief said the outcome turned out well.

Before the end of the day the driver was already back home, said the Sundre RCMP detachment’s Const. Don Poirier.

"Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the collision and it appears that the male driver simply fell asleep at the wheel and drifted over into the ditch striking a power pole," said Cpl. Joe Mandel, adding no charges were expected.
