SUNDRE – Although most of the teams that participated in the 35th edition of the Sundre Oilmen’s Bonspiel were from town, several drove out from the greater region.
They included rinks from Cremona, Torrington, as well as Rocky Mountain House, said Tanille Rock, one of the event’s organizers.
The A event winners were: Travis Phillips, Don Brian, Colby Brian and Coltan Mitchell.
The B event winners were: Cliff Fobes, Brian Park, Cauy Fobes and Gillian Fobes.
The C event winners were Kevin Irving, Svend Nielsen, Meg Bargholz and Stephania Turner.
Taking the D event were Barry Rock, Nels Brian, Dan McGonigle and Geoff Van Ry.
“Overall, the bonspiel went great,” said Rock, calling it “a success, as always.”
With spring just barely days away, the Sundre Curling Club’s season is now all but over with only one remaining spiel.
Club president Lonnie Halladay said earlier this month that almost two dozens rinks had registered well in advance of the season wind-up Open Spiel, which takes place April 3-7.
“We’re hoping to get 32 teams,” said Halladay, adding that’s as many as the club would comfortably be able to accommodate given the size of the rink.
“Our facility is not big enough to do more than that,” he said.
Last year, the club had 28 teams coming out to participate in the Open Spiel and with the event’s early-April timing, by which point most other clubs have already wrapped up their seasons, Halladay was optimistic about beating that turnout this time around.
