SUNDRE - Council has unanimously agreed to provide additional funding for the pickleball court following a request to contribute another $5,000 that the Totem Group pledged to match.
Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, reminded council that a prior $5,000 had earlier this year already been granted toward the project, which largely involved resurfacing the existing tennis courts behind Sundre High School.
“The Totem Group matched that amount,” said Nelson. “They have come forward and offered to grant another $5,000 if the town matches that as well."
That amount will leave the organizers with very little left to raise and that the court is expected to be completed this summer, she said.
Brenda Salsman, who has spearheaded the fundraising effort for the pickleball courts, recently told The Albertan prior to council’s meeting that about $32,500 had been raised toward the roughly $35,000 resurfacing project, with another additional $2,000 to $3,000 to repaint lines.
During the spring workshop, council had also discussed the donation and supported the project, said Nelson, adding the recommended action was to approve another $5,000 with the funds to be drawn from general corporate stabilization.
Coun. Cheri Funke inquired why the request bypassed the application process through the grant committee for consideration prior to ending up before council for a final decision.
“The discussion at the spring workshop was to just bring it forward to a council meeting for a decision,” said Nelson.
