SUNDRE – With the ongoing maintenance work at the indoor pool taking a bit longer than initially anticipated, local swimmers will have to wait a little longer before plunging back into the water.
“Regrouting is taking longer than suspected,” said Kari McQuaid, the Sundre & District Aquaplex’s manager, adding the work is requiring more than the previously estimated amount of grout needed to fill.
“Good thing it is getting done,” McQuaid told the Albertan on Friday, Sept. 27 when providing an update.
The work began earlier in September after the pool was drained and was originally expected to take approximately one month.
Since then, staff have been busy painting and electricians were almost done changing out the lighting above the pool, she said, adding the large east wall by the pool was repainted a “beautiful bright blue” courtesy of Melissa Shippy.
“We are hoping the addition of some brighter colours creates a fun and playful atmosphere, making the space feel lively and inviting,” said McQuaid.
Meanwhile, diverters have been installed in the main drains of the pool’s large basin, completing an upgrade to be compliant with current Alberta Health pool standards, she said.
“Assuming everything from here goes smoothly,” McQuaid said the pool could reopen early next month.
“We are anticipating it being the beginning of November now by the time the grout cures and we get it refilled balanced and tested.”
McQuaid previously told the Albertan earlier in September that the underwater windows for the light fixtures had also already been fixed.
In the meantime, the facility’s indoor fitness centre remains opens.
