SUNDRE – The Town of Sundre council proclaimed Sept. 22-28 as Development Officers Week.

Earlier this month, the council heard a report detailing background on the request presented by the Alberta Development Officers Association (ADOA).

Development officers are well-versed as planning and development specialists who are knowledgable in legislation, policy as well as bylaws, systems and technical requirements for physical development within communities throughout the province, said Linda Nelson, reading from an administrative report in the meeting’s agenda.

They also enforce and administer land use regulations and policies on behalf of municipalities and are designated to the position of development authority by the municipality as defined by the Municipal Government Act, Nelson elaborated.

The provincial association representing Alberta’s development officers had submitted a request asking municipalities to recognize their contributions as well as to publicly recognize the work of province-wide colleagues in planning and development

Additionally, the organization’s annual conference will also be celebrating the 40th anniversary of ADOA and takes place Sept. 24 - 27 in Calgary.

Coun. Paul Isaac moved to proclaim Sept. 22-28 as Development Officers Week.

Prior to the motion passing unanimously, Coun. Owen Petersen asked if administration planned to send any the municipality’s staff to this conference, which Nelson confirmed.

“We generally send our development officers,” she said.
