SUNDRE – Local Mounties were called out to the Sundre Arena during the U15 Huskies home tournament to keep the peace in response to what the detachment's sergeant described as a situation that police were told was becoming “unruly.”
Members were called out on Saturday, Dec. 9 to the Sundre Arena in response to a report that “things were getting ‘unruly’ during a hockey game,” Sgt. Trent Sperlie wrote in a weekly recap of 22 occurrences that took place between Tuesday, Dec. 5 and Monday, Dec. 11.
“Members attended to keep the peace,” Sperlie said, adding that “no offence was determined to have occurred and no charges were laid.”
On the same day but in an unrelated police file regarding an incident in which alcohol was believed to have been a factor, the sergeant said an assault was also reported with charges for assault and disobeying a court order subsequently being laid.
The following day, on Sunday, Dec. 10, police also responded to a report of an assault with a weapon at a licensed business in Sundre with related charges pending against the suspect, who was also charged with two traffic violations, said Sperlie, adding alcohol was believed to be a factor in this incident as well.
Among the other files logged that were noted by the sergeant were two incidents on Thursday, Dec. 7.
One of them involved attempted fraud, with a scammer posing as an Amazon employee who called by phone to request the victim obtain pre-paid VISA credit cards and then send the information back to the caller. However, the victim realized the call was a scam before any money or information was given, said Sperlie, adding no charges were laid.
That same day, the sergeant said police also received a report about two community mail boxes in Mountain View County being broken into.
“Both had the locks broken on the parcel compartments,” he said.
“It is believed that no parcels were in the boxes at the time.”
The day prior, on Wednesday, Dec. 6, there were three incidents the sergeant noted.
After an intoxicated male was removed from a business property in town, the same individual was later reported to be seen having issues walking and EMS was subsequently dispatched to assess the situation, he said, adding that while alcohol was believed to have been a factor, no charges were laid.
That same day, a pickup truck with a trailer in tow lost control over some ice and rolled off of Highway 584 west of Sundre, he said, adding the driver did not sustain life-threatening injuries.
That was also the same day when a Sundre Fire Department bush rescue unit that was responding to a call for mutual aid ended up sliding backwards and rolling into a ditch after being forced to come to a complete stop on an uphill portion of the Forestry Trunk Road in the face of two stuck vehicles that were blocking traffic in both directions. Emergency responders had been called out when a motorist had reportedly become stranded on the edge of a steep embankment in the Burnt Timber area due to icy road conditions, he said.
“As a result of the poor road conditions in the same area, a second vehicle slid part way off the road and became stuck, an ambulance slid off the road and became stuck and a fire truck from Sundre slid backwards on a hill and rolled over,” he said, adding no injuries were reported as a result.
“EMS and (Sundre) Fire were responding to the initial call of the motorist stranded on a steep embankment,” he said, adding the stranded motorist was found and transported to Sundre.
Additionally, police also issued one warning as well as two tickets under the Traffic Safety Act throughout the span of the week.
