SUNDRE – Mounties are on the lookout for leads after unidentified suspects stole several vehicles from town, one of which was later located and recovered by the Calgary Police Service.

During the early morning hours of Monday, Dec. 11, there were three reported incidents of breaking-and-entering, vehicle theft, as well as theft, according to Sgt. Trent Sperlie, the Sundre RCMP detachment’s commander.

In Sundre’s northeast subdivision, he reported that an unknown person or persons had broken into a garage at a residence located along 11A Ave. and stole a 2019 black Chevrolet Silverado along with a wallet.

And just a few blocks to the south in the area of 9th Ave., he said an unknown person or persons went through a parked vehicle and proceeded to steal some credit cards along with keys to a local business.

Then, at about 5:30 a.m., as-yet unidentified suspects used the stolen keys to gain access to the Fountain Tire in Sundre, the sergeant said, adding they proceeded to steal a white 2019 Toyota RAV 4 from the business.

When Mounties arrived at the scene, members located the stolen black Chevrolet Silverado, which had been abandoned, but the suspects had by that point already fled, he said.

“I can only speculate, but they probably figured out that OnStar was tracking them,” he said in response to follow-up questions.

“Because they stole it and abandoned real quick.”

The stolen RAV 4 was subsequently recovered by Calgary Police Service on Thursday, Dec. 14, the sergeant reported.

“Calgary (Police) did arrest somebody in the vehicle,” he told the Albertan. “So, there’s that (investigational) avenue that’s being looked at. But right now, nobody’s been (officially) identified yet.”

The situation serves as a reminder not only to keep vehicles locked, but especially never to leave valuables inside, he said.

“We don’t want to have to live almost like we’re in jail ourselves where we’ve got to watch every step we take,” he said. “But the reality of the world we live in right now, is one that we do have to take those extra precautions.”

Anyone with information about these incidents or who may have surveillance or possibly dash cam video footage, is asked to contact the Sundre RCMP’s 24-7 complaint line at 403-638-3655.

Alternatively, information can also be provided anonymously either by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), going online at www.P3Tips.com, or by using the P3 Tips app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards anonymously for information that leads to an arrest.
