SUNDRE - With 2022 marking the centennial milestone of the ongoing effort to raise awareness about fire safety and preparedness, Sundre was among the municipalities encouraged by the National Fire Protection Association to proclaim Oct. 9-15 as Fire Prevention Week.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape,” Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, told council while reading background information in the meeting’s agenda package during a recent meeting.

The initiative is intended to “educate people about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safer from home fires,” said Nelson.

“Today’s homes burn faster than ever,” she said, adding occupants of a residence that catches fire might “have as little as two minutes, or even less time, to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds.”

That’s why planning in advance coupled with ensuring early warning systems such as smoke alarms are fully functional is so important, she said.

In the absence of further conversation or questions from council, a motion was unanimously carried to proclaim Oct. 9-15 as Fire Prevention Week, and by extension to “urge all the citizens of Sundre to develop a family action plan for home escape plan and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of Sundre’s fire and emergency services.”
