SUNDRE – The municipality has rescheduled an open house to provide the community with an opportunity to learn more about, as well as submit feedback on, the revised draft municipal development plan.

Originally set for the end of May, the stakeholder consultation is now scheduled for Tuesday, June 25 from 4-7 p.m. at the Sundre Community Centre. The municipality is looking for the community’s input and comments on the document’s draft that outlines the plan’s vision, objectives and policies.

The municipal development plan was last revised and approved in 2013, and the latest process to modernize the document that will provide guidance for the vision of the town’s future began in the fall of 2022 and winter of 2023 with a background analysis, according to a timeline posted by the town.

The first round of stakeholder consultations were conducted in 2023 with the first draft introduced in the winter of 2024. The second round of stakeholder consultations are next on the docket before the document is ultimately expected to be approved and adopted later this fall.

“The municipal development plan is an overarching document that would guide other statutory plans like the area structure plan,” Benazir Thaha Valencia, senior planner, told council during the May 27 meeting.

Regulatory documents such as the municipality’s land use bylaw get updated whenever the municipal development plan is revised, she said.

“The land use bylaw must comply with the municipal development plan, so there is a hierarchy,” said Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, in response to a question for clarification from council.
