Riders fly the colours as them move down Main Avenue during Saturday's Sundre rodeo parade. The parade and rodeo were both resounding successes in 2024.

SUNDRE - The Sundre Professional Rodeo was a great success, with record and near-record crowds watching outstanding competition in all events under ideal weather conditions, says long-time association president Shane Crouch.

Held June 21-22, this year’s rodeo featured some of the top competitors anywhere, he said, noting more than 600 athletes took part.

“We had probably the best competition we’ve ever had, with big name contestants from all over the world,” Crouch told the Albertan. “We had several world champions and Canadian champions. It was by far the largest contestant entry we’ve ever had. We had about 640 with our novice events.”

The rodeo saw large crowds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the arena having overall seating for about 3,000 spectators.

“It was a fantastic turnout,” he said. “We had sold-out crowds on Saturday and close to sold out on Friday and Sunday. All in all, it was record breaking crowds for sure.”

He noted plans are now in the works to add a new 500-seat grandstand behind the bucking shoots for the 2025 season.

“We are getting so much community support that I’m running out of room for my sponsors’” he said. “We will get going on that project hopefully this fall.”

As always volunteers were the key to the success of the Sundre rodeo, he noted.

“We had more than 100 volunteers and it’s mostly local, Sundre people who volunteer,” he said.

The ladies break-away roping event at the Sundre rodeo has the highest payout in Canada, he said.

“We’ve had it for three years, since its inception. We pay $8,002 for our break-away roping. It’s a fantastic event and the fans really love it. We are very proud to have it,” said Crouch

The Sundre Rodeo Association president for the past 11 years, Crouch has been involved with the Sundre rodeo for more than 40 years, including as a competitor in steer wrestling in the early 1980s.

Meanwhile, the Sundre parade, held on Saturday morning under ideal sunny conditions, was also a big hit with visitors of all ages.
“They did an absolutely fantastic job this year,” he said. “It was a really good parade. The pancake breakfast had close to 5,000 people.”
