SUNDRE – A contingent of top-performing track and field athletes from the local high school recently represented Sundre on the provincial stage earlier this month.
There were 11 students from Sundre High School who qualified to compete at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association’s Track and Field Championships meet in Edmonton on June 7-8.
The high school team had previously won the divisional meet and came home with the South Central Zone 2A Championship banner as well.
The provincial meet hosted in Alberta’s capital marked the end of the Sundre High School’s 2024 track season and saw several of the students earn spots on the podium.
Evyn Read, a past gold medalist in the pole vault for Sundre, returned this season to offer the vaulters some help in reaching new heights.
Aspen Luzi won the gold medal in the junior women’s high jump while Haydyn Scott captured the junior men’s pole vault silver medal.
Also reaching the podium for intermediate pole vault was Niek Sleurink, who placed third.
Meanwhile, Bella Packer placed fifth in javelin and Doel Martyn ended up seventh in discus.
The other athletes also did well and their collective performance helped secure for Sundre a fifth-place finish overall in the province for 2A provincials.
