SUNDRE – After finishing regular league play in second place, the U15 Huskies’ season ended this past weekend when they were narrowly defeated by a challenging rival.

The Sundre U15 Huskies, who play in the Central Alberta Hockey League, came into the final rounds with a regular season record of 12 wins, three losses and one tie, said coach Austin Fyten.

They played twice against Hanna over the past weekend, once on home ice on Friday night followed the next day by a game on the road.

Friday night’s match proved to be a nail-biter that left fans on the edge of their seats.

“It was really good. It was packed,” Fyten said about the arena.

“We filled up the whole one side and the parents made posters for the boys. It was a lot of fun. It was really good to see the support,” he said.

Perhaps the fans’ energetic support provided that little bit of additional fuel for the proverbial fire in the boys’ bellies.

“That was probably one of our best games of the season,” said Fyten, adding the game ended tied at two.

But on Saturday, the tables turned in Hanna’s favour and the Huskies were defeated 6-3. However, the coach was nevertheless pleased by the team’s performance.

“Hanna ended up taking the banner but the boys played really hard and I’m super proud of the effort they put in,” he said, calling the competitors “a good team.”

Asked where he saw the Huskies develop the most throughout the past season, Fyten said they really seemed to gel.

“I thought the team really came together,” he said.

“Our lower end guys really closed the gap and they made a difference towards the end of the season, and we had some four or five players that really led the way. So, I think all in all it was it was a successful season,” he elaborated.

“I think the boys had fun, and I’m just proud of how they played.”

Although their season is now over, they still had plans to celebrate their accomplishments and time together, with the Sundre Minor Hockey Association also preparing for the annual awards night on April 3.
