Community centre rental fee waiver approved

Chief administrative officer Linda Nelson outlined a request from the Greenwood Neighbourhood Place Society to waive the Sundre Community Centre’s $169 rental fee to host an open house for the medical community.

The society, in conjunction with the Cumming School of Medicine and the University of Calgary, is planning an event called House Calls with the Dean on May 2. The university hosts these programs to engage communities as well as increase awareness of the medical school and to discuss current health-care topics, research and related matters.

Coun. Rob Wolfe motioned to waive the rental fee.

Seeking clarification, Coun. Cheri Funke inquired whether there is going to be a charge of admission for anyone interested in attending the event, or if participation is free.

Development officer Betty Ann Fountain said correspondence submitted by the society stated the general public is being asked about what kinds of topics should be covered and had the impression the event would be open to anyone who is interested.

“I don’t see anything in the email that says people are being charged,” she said.

From a finance perspective, Funke asked whether approving the request would represent a loss of revenue for the community centre or be covered by council donation.

“Currently, it’s loss of revenue,” replied Chris Albert, director of corporate services.

Coun. Charlene Preston pointed out this was not the first time such a request was brought forward and suggested further discussing the matter during the spring workshop.

“I would like us to have a policy in place for it,” she said.

Wolfe’s motion carried with Coun. Todd Dalke and Preston opposed.

Appeal board appointees approved

Last October, council approved a bylaw to establish an Intermunicipal Subdivision and Development Appeal Board as per the Municipal Government Act, as well as a corresponding agreement among the neighbouring municipalities of Cremona, Carstairs and Didsbury.

The board was created to hear appeals related to decisions made by the development authority and subdivision authority pertaining to lands located within each municipality.

Council carried motions appointing Shelley Kohut and Jon Allan for one-year terms on the appeal board.
