SUNDRE — Council unanimously carried a motion proclaiming the week of May 9-13 as Economic Development Week in Sundre.
“This one does come up annually,” Linda Nelson, the Town of Sundre's chief administrative officer, told council during a recent, regularly-scheduled meeting. “It’s a request to all municipalities in Alberta.”
Following the proclamation, she said the municipality will send the item back to Economic Developers Alberta, which will list Sundre among the municipalities that supported economic development week.
In background information presented in council’s agenda for the meeting, economic development is described as “the intentional practice of improving a community’s economic well-being and quality of life.”
This includes the ongoing effort to facilitate a broad range of activities to attract, create and retain jobs, as well as to foster a resilient, pro-growth tax base and an inclusive economy. The practice also involves a collaborative approach that involves industry, government, and a variety of community stakeholders.
Coun. Jaime Marr, who moved the recommended action as her first proclamation as a member of council, said, “Who can be against economic development for a municipality?”
Marr praised the efforts of the municipality’s economic development department, which is run by Jon Allan, economic development officer.
