There are so many things that are overlooked when it comes to the topic of sleep, so let's get into the importance of sleep for balanced living.
How Much Sleep Do You Need?
The average adult needs seven to nine hours of sleep. Although you may think that you can get away with six hours of sleep, that's not really the healthiest way to go. Though you might not see it right away, over time consistent schedules of under-sleeping will cause a plethora of health problems. These health problems are serious and can contribute to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke.
Disrupted Sleep
Most people are aware by now that screens and other lights can affect your quality of sleep. Experts say that in order to get a good night's sleep, you should be off of your devices for at least an hour before you go to bed. This is the best option, however if you are not willing to sacrifice your downtime there are other options like putting a blue light filter on your phone, or wearing blue light tinted glasses.
Oversleeping
Sleeping too much can cause more problems than you may think! Sleeping too much can actually make you more tired. Also, scientists have found that oversleeping can increase your chances of developing diabetes and obesity… but I'm sure just five more minutes is okay!
Sleep Deprivation
Sometimes people find that it takes them hours to fall asleep at night while for others, they’re asleep before their head even touches the pillow. If you are one of those people that can fall asleep instantly chances are, you're probably sleep deprived; and that doesn't go away with just one day of sleeping in. Your body needs time to heal and recharge. As humans we cannot function without sleep so if you are nodding off instantly due to derived sleep, make the necessary lifestyle changes.
Who doesn't love to sleep? Well probably people that experience nightmares and sleep paralysis (please visit a sleep clinic for help with that)… but other than that sleep is the thing that most people look forward to every day. Why not make your sleep worthwhile by making sure that you're getting enough sleep, turning the screens off at least an hour before bed, and making sure that you're not oversleeping. Have a good night!
