There's a five-way race to be the next elected member of the 45th Canadian Parliament for the Yellowhead riding in the April 28 federal election.

The Albertan offered candidates an opportunity to submit a bio and outline policy priorities while also answering two questions: First, what do you think the Canadian government should be prepared to do in response to the ongoing threat of U.S. tariffs? And second, would you support or speak out against any suggestions for Alberta to separate or become the 51st state?

All five candidates submitted responses which were edited to fit the specified word count.

Michael Fark, Liberal Party of Canada

Michael’s been a stone mason and home builder, worked in international crisis management, and directed large infrastructure projects where he delivered housing and critical services in Canmore and Jasper. Throughout his career, he’s consistently worked to support populations in crisis and led initiatives to build community. Recently, Michael’s seen decision makers letting their constituents down, which is why he is running in this election. Rural Alberta has been chronically underrepresented in both conservative and liberal parties in Ottawa. This is a critical time both in the riding and the country, and Michael believes we need strong representation and a commitment to doing the work.

Michael has the experience and proven track record to deliver on his priorities. He’s dedicated to protecting Yellowhead watersheds, addressing housing shortages and supporting the middle class through progressive taxation that holds corporations accountable.

Michael’s priorities are defending Canada and Yellowhead’s interests, investing in infrastructure, protecting the environment – specifically watersheds, and ensuring our shared values of strong healthcare and education are respected and implemented by the province. While Yellowhead has diverse industries, our communities are united in the need for strong transportation to get goods to market, economic activity, healthy ecosystems and robust healthcare and education. Michael has worked on the side of implementation and now plans to leverage the position of MP to bring representation to rural Alberta.

The Canadian government needs to develop and invest in diversified trade partnerships and infrastructure to get Canadian goods to different markets. By ensuring we have strong partnerships with other trade partners, we will have a more resilient economy and increased protection from US threats.

Also, I have spent 25 years dealing with challenging governments and have a high degree of experience when it comes to difficult negotiations and crisis management. The threats from the Trump administration are real and cannot be ignored.

I have every intention of leveraging the position of MP to drive forward strong and effective policy that enables Canada to diversify its trading partners, reducing our reliance on the U.S.

Diversified trade partnerships strengthen our relationships with like-minded countries so that we can stand together against any hostile government now and in the future.

I do not support Alberta separation or annexation to the U.S.
