"Deep sorrow" over fatal tent collapse at retreat: Westlock County

Westlock County officials are responding to the tent collapse yesterday, July 31 at the Westlock Meditation Center and are addressing the community and press with “deep sorrow”, following the incident that took the life of one person and injured dozens of others.

In a statement released just before 11 a.m., Aug. 1, Westlock County Reeve Christine Wiese said they are saddened and mourning the tragic event, saying their “hearts go out to the families and friends affected by this unfortunate event.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the individual who lost their life. We also offer our heartfelt support to those who are recovering from injuries and to their loved ones who are providing them care and comfort,” said Wiese in the statement.

“To the residents of Westlock County, and especially to the owner and staff of the Westlock Meditation Center, we share in your grief and sorrow. This incident has deeply impacted our community, and we stand together in mourning and support.”

She applauded the efforts of emergency responders, who were quick to arrive on the scene and provide immediate assistance.

“We commend the Emergency Medical Services, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and all the firefighters from Busby, Pickardville, Clyde and Town of Westlock for their prompt and professional actions during this difficult time,” said Wiese.

“Your dedication and swift response are greatly appreciated and have been a beacon of hope and care amid the tragedy.”

The statement also notes the impact of the incident on the community and asks for patience and respect for privacy of those affected as they “navigate through this challenging time together.”

RCMP are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of this incident.
