CARSTAIRS - Jazzercise enthusiasts from Carstairs and the surrounding area recently got together for a fundraising event at the Carstairs Community Hall to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.

The Speakeasy Soiree featured jazzercise, yoga, a burlesque workshop, a photo booth, a silent auction and more.

Rianna Wackett, owner of Carstairs Jazzerise, said everyone had a good time for a great cause at the 1920s-themed fundraiser.

"We had about 70 people who came," said Wackett. "We definitely did a lot better than I anticipated. It was heartwarming to see so many people from the community coming together to support such a cause that is so near and dear to many of us."

The soiree featured a professional DJ, local Jaymz Metherall of Jayam Entertainment, spinning the jams.

Wackett said that with October being breast cancer awareness month, it's important to raise funds to help battle cancer.

"We all know at least one person affected by such a terrible disease," she said. "These kinds of events help raise awareness and money to be donated to breast cancer charitable organizations."

In total, more than $3,000 was raised at the Speakeasy Soiree for the Canadian Cancer Society, said Wackett.

"We almost sold out," she said. "People were very generous. Our raffle went so fast. I can't believe how many people were buying raffle tickets. Our silent auction was over $1,300. We did a photo booth by donation."
