Members of the Hugh Sutherland School (Carstairs) Kodiaks JV girls basketball team celebrate finishing first at the SAIT Silver Belle Tournament in Calgary earlier in the season.

CARSTAIRS - The Hugh Sutherland School (HSS) Kodiaks JV girls' basketball team from Carstairs finished up their season recently. The Kodiaks qualified for the South Central 2A JV Zone Championships on March 13-14 in Strathmore; however, all zone tournaments were cancelled, due to COVID-19 concerns.

The Kodiaks had a team with players ranging all the way from Grade 8 right up to Grade 12. Head coach Amanda Pedlar said it was very satisfying for the coaches to see players mould together as a team and learn to work together.

"There is nothing more satisfying as a coach than watching your team learn the game and develop together," said Pedlar. "Watching your players have those aha moments when they finally understand a concept or skill. It's been amazing to watch their progress."

The Kodiaks played in the Chinook's Edge senior league since there was no girls' JV league this year. The team finished fifth in league standings and had wins over Didsbury and Cremona.

HSS finished fifth in playoffs as well, beating Crossfield in their last game by a big margin. Leading the team in scoring in that game were Abigail Porter with 21 points and Rashidah Shabazz with 19 points.

Another big highlight of the season for the Kodiaks was the annual Natasha Cameron Nielson (NCN) Memorial Tournament in January. The tournament honours the memory of the former Kodiak player and coach who passed away at 21.

"I always love the NCN as it holds a special place in my heart," she said.

Pedlar plans to host her popular Camp 3D once again this summer, Aug. 10-13. The all female camp features Michelle and Katherine Plouff from Canada's national team.

"This is my fourth year creating and running the camp," she said. "It seems to be on track to fill up this year. I can't wait to work with all the participants this summer and learn from our incredible lineup of coaches."
